From the history of the institute
The Samarkand Institute of Veterinary Medicine, formerly named the Samarkand Agricultural Institute, was founded in 1929. The Institute is one of the largest institutes in Central Asia in veterinary medicine.
Currently, the institute trains highly qualified holders of bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, candidates and doctors of science. The institute has four faculties that qualify holders of bachelor’s degree in the following areas:
Veterinary medicine ()

Crop production (cultivation of grazing steppe plants)
Agronomy (feed crops)
Technology of processing livestock products.
The following scientists, parasitologists of the institute (professor) Badanin N.V., academician Irgashev I.Kh., specialist in Karakul farming industry (professor) Rakhimov A.A., zootechnicians (professors) Pushkarev P.M. and Mavlyanov N.A., scientists in plant physiology (professor) Khaitov R.Kh., animal morphology (professors) Vinogradov P.P., Narziev D.Kh. and Ibrahimov Sh.I., internal non-infectious animal diseases (professor) Ibragimov H.Z., scientist in selection and seed production (professor) Abdukarimov D.T., plant growing (professor) Gorelov E.P., scientist in soil science (professor) Kuguchkov D.M., scientist in Plant Protection and Quarantine (professor) Kosobutsky M.I., scientist in Agricultural Economics (professor) Husanov M.Kh. opened scientific schools in various areas of agriculture and veterinary medicine.
There are modern laboratories, classrooms, which are equipped with the state of the art technology and school buildings at the disposal of students and teaching staff. There is also available a rich information resource center, a sport complex and student dormitories. Students have all the opportunities for practical training and make research in the Training center and training range of the institute. Along with educational background and training, which is conducted at the 23 departments of the institute, more than 25 doctors of sciences, professors, 130 candidates of sciences, associate professors conduct their research works. The number of students enrolled in the full-time department is more than 2283 and 937 students get their knowledge in-service training.
The Institute has trained more than 39,000 highly qualified specialists up to now. Particular attention is paid to postgraduate education - the training of young scientific teachers to ensure continuity of education. During 89 years of its existence, over 120 Doctors of Science and 343 PhD Candidates have prepared and presented a thesis at the Institute. Over the past 10 years, there were presented 24 doctoral and 61 Ph.D. thesis.
The followings were produced by the scientists of the institute: 7 types of cereal crops, 3 flukes of potatoes, 2 varieties of chickpeas, 3 species of Karakul sheep, 4 types of veterinary specimen, 7 new mechanisms in animal breeding. As a result of creative work and extensive scientific research, the scientists of the Institute published more than 100 textbooks and study guides, monographs, 120 scientific and practical recommendations on general and special disciplines that are being utilized in the national economy of the country.
The teachers diligently familiarize students with the multifaceted secrets of the agrarian sciences and educate them to be faithful to the Motherland and be dedicated people, forming their spiritual and educational world outlook. At present, the institute is actively developing teaching and methodological, scientific and practical cooperation with number of foreign countries, including universities in the USA, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, the Russian Federation and other countries.
The research works are mainly aimed at sustainable development of agriculture, increasing livestock products, creating new high-yielding and early varieties of crops, improving soil fertility, ensuring ecological cleanness of the environment, protecting livestock from various diseases, scientists do their best to create an effective system for agricultural technology, machines and aggregates, scientists are working on the organization of the economy of agricultural production, accounting and audit, the analysis of the activities of the agrarian economy.
In the field of scientific research, special attention is paid to the issues of a clean environment and pure drinking water, the technologies, which are forwarded to generate cheap electricity, as well as problems of using the achievements of biotechnological and genetic patterns.
